Off to California is a popular session hornpipe generally played in G. I was surprised to find two distinct settings in O'Neill's book, as well as a close cousin tune called "Whiskey You're the Devil". The set I play here is a standard version of Off to CA, followed by Whiskey (which is very similar, but in A, and with a few notable phrases), followed by O'Neill's second setting of Off to CA (back in G, but with some old-fashioned phrase styles. That second setting is a "cuter" hornpipe, makes me think of American dance halls, with those accent notes and accidentals.
This is part of my weekly hornpipe home-recording project; thanks for your interest. With 3 tunes, this is 3x longer than my usual recording length, which was a challenge.
Great! How long did it take you to get to that level of playing?
