Auto-Harvesting Sugar Cane Farm ( Pistons! )

Hey all, patch 1.7 came out today, and I felt the need to do something with it while I was waiting for my server mc.deviantevil.net to update to Bukkit 1.7. I decided to make a fully automatic sugar cane farm, using pistons.

The first model was awful, as it only took of the top block of the sugar cane. I updated it after finding the flaws it had and improved it with a better, newer and more compact design. The redstone it takes to make this is huge, it'll take you atleast two stacks of redstone ( which is a lot for me, as I never mine redstone, just buy it from other players ), and it is a very ineffective harvester as well, mainly because it only gets about 3/8 of all the sugar cane that is harvested. This can be made up for if you add on multiple layers of piston/sugar cane levels.

Currently the three levels on this farm produce you about 80 sugar cane. The rest of it remains on the dirt or on the pistons that push the sugar cane off. You'd be much better off doing old fashioned farming, but what fun is that? If you really want to have more sugar cane production though, turn this into a tower. If you increased this by 5 levels or so, you should get about 4 stacks per harvest, not bad for the push of a button. It is very in-compact height-wise though, so you will definately want to have a lot of verticle space, or expand this horizontally.

This is my second demonstration of practical uses of redstone, the first being rapid-pulser turrets that can be fit in a very compact area.

PS. I looked at about 30 seconds of your "sugarcan" farm video, and I must say, you really did do a wonderful job. The microsoft word text in the beginning, the fast graphics low fog video, the watermark in the bottom left in the screen, and the 3 frames per second, wow, you must be a video making wizard.

Oh, and not to mention that it's no where near better than mine because you STILL had to grab the sugar cane from the sides. Fail.
