Fruits basket is a wonderfully dark fantasy. At first it is a silly comedy, but it gets much deeper into the actual plot line, and you find out just how fiercely promises can be carried out...and taken advantage of. An awesome and addicting manga, and a flippant, silly excuse for an anime.

I don't fully understand Fruits Basket. How come it was only given one season? And what kind of anime is it? Is it some sort of anime soap opera? o_O

Well, I guess it's sort of a soap opera with only a few serious moments. They're coming out with the second season (which is already available in Japan), but they've only released the first because the manga is still in production. Kind of like the anime 'Naruto'.
It's actually very humorous, and extremely silly. A good anime to watch if you're bored.
