Art Hickman & His Orchestra - Darling, Introducing "Love Flower" (Schonberg /Silvers), Columbia 1920 (USA, accoustic recording)

NOTE: Art HICKMAN -- (b. 1886, Oakland, CA, USA, d. 1930. San Francisco, CA). Quite possibly, Art Hickman's orchestra might have been America's first "jass" band. It was formed in San Francisco ca. 1913 and it was long resident at San Francisco's St Francis Hotel, and other hotels managed by his life-long friend James Woods. Although Hickman considered "jass" as nothing more but a "noise", there's no doubt among historians of jazz that his recordings from years 1913-20 present early forms of a "jazzy music" for dancing -- parhaps the reason being Hickman's lack of any kind of indiosyncrasy to employ black musicians into his "white" band. He gained national recognition when Broadway showman Florenz Ziegfeld brought his orchestra to New York City to star in one of his Broadway shows. Ever since, Art Hickman's band beacame one of most popular and best paid dance orchestras in USA of the Roaring 1920s and thru 1930s. Hickman is also well recalled today as the composer of "Rose Room".

Ignoring rather poor sound in this recording, I decided to include it as historical souvenir into my uploads. Especially, when simple and lovely title encourages me to make another charming journey through my collection of hats, hairdressings, fashions, lovely faces and even - God, have mercy! - ladies' hose suporters of the 1910-20s.

  • Typical for the era, offering two songs "for the price of one", in a well-arranged mini medley. Very enjoyable!

  • @1920sbuff I had no idea they had such recording habits in those times! But indeed, now when I think a little I can recall a few such recordings "two in one" I have in my collection!

  • Love this early Art Hickman!

  • @abendstunde49 Go to the link I enclosed and see the difference between "early" and "late" Hickman. They sound like two completely different orchestras. He made enormous progress and no wonder he was one of top 3-4 dance bands in USA in 1920/30s.

  • Very nice!

  • @Turkeydoodlers Thank you :-)

  • The only decade in history to be longed for some 80+ years later. I think most of us would go back if given the chance.

  • How I wish there was high quality recordings of more stuff from 1910-1930..... but we can appreciate what there is :)

  • George Gershwin recorded this for the player piano also.

  • Those early Columbias were mostly of poor sound quality. But there are many interesting early attempts on syncopated music that make them worth listening to. Like this one. Thanks a lot for this document!

  • An earful of beautiful sounds and charming early 20th century fashion.
