Plus4 Dead, 3 Missing in Waters Off New York4 Dead, 3 Missing in Waters Off New YorkThe Associated PressThe search for a 10-year-old girl in the waters off Coney Island has been suspended. She is one of three swimmers still missing from powerful ocean currents at area beaches over the weekend. (July 28)NATS: helicopter These are grim days at the beaches off New York City and Long Island. Four dead and three more missing in the ocean since Friday - helicopters and boats scour the coastline, expecting bodies of the missing to surface. The family of a 10-year-old girl kept vigil after she disappeared in the waters Saturday. NATS: god bless her Witnesses say lifeguards were too preoccupied with another rescue to react. (Wanda Gonzalez, Witness) "Three lifeguards were just standing there, three lifeguards were just standing there and they didn't do anything about it, and my sister is yelling and screaming, hysterical, crying, telling them 'please this kids drowning' there were two kids drowning by the time they noticed the other, she was gone." (Mark Vega, Witness "It was too late, three times they did it, she was yelling, and they weren't paying attention, the last time her little arm went up and she just disappeared. (Ted Shaffrey, The Associated Press) "Red flags dot large portions of the beach here at Coney Island, warning people to stay out of the water." NATS: child screaming Lifeguards here have had to perform multiple rescues over the last few days. Some parts of the beach remain open, and parents are laying down strict rules for their children: "It's scary and fun." "Not above the waist!" Off shore storms were causing the unusually rough surf and rip currents. NATS: I'm not going in cause I don't want to get pulled under. TAKE animation, TED will put in Lifeguards are reminding swimmers not to fight against rip currents by trying to swim against them directly back toward shore. Instead, swim parallel to the beach line, out of the current...or simply let the current take you out until it dissipates, then swim back. Ted Shaffrey, The Associated Press, Coney Island, New York

  • They found her body today when I was there.

  • Very sad. If in fact the lifeguards "were just standing there" as the first lady said then this needs to be investigated but it sounds as though they were busy with another rescue. The second guy says about the lifeguards "they werent paying any attention" AND that he watched as the little girl went under for the last time. WTF!???! How can you just stand by and watch someone drowned?? Jump in and help her or at least attempt to. DAMN.
