Roger Hodgson, co-founder of Supertramp is currently on tour, visit www.RogerHodgson.com for his latest tour schedule or go to www.RogerHodgsonstore.com to pick up his latest album.

This video is a slideshow that I put together after hearing the song for the first time on the radio. It struck a chord in me and I wanted to put images to the lyrics that complimented the feelings that I personally took away from hearing it. The sequence is sort of my own travels and revelations, independent from representing Mr. Hodgson and Supertramp. But, I hope that the general idea and message of trying to walk the path of self discovery is on point.

Lyrics:

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily,
joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
clinical, intellectual, cynical.

There are times when all the world's asleep,
the questions run too deep
for such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am.

Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical,
liberal, fanatical, criminal.
Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're
acceptable, respecable, presentable, a vegtable!

At night, when all the world's asleep,
the questions run so deep
for such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am.

Thanks for watching. Please comment. Peace.

  • @ColumbiaPerna The point of making this video WAS to put still photos that matched the lyrics, as interpreted by myself, at the time. "Birds in the trees" didn't do much for me, so I went with the obvious. As for the church, I grew up with Christianity, like a good majority of people in Texas do. So, that was part of my personal interpretation/indoctrination. To be fair though, I feel the same way about all monotheistic religions equally. How's that??

  • the song for some reason reminds me of my principal

  • Nice, very nice! Great pictures which fit perfectly... I loved it!

  • @takstestqueen w00t? xD

  • @Acmemechanic It's pretty bold of you to homeschool your children, and I hope that goes well. I also hope you don't teach them to capitalize every word in a sentence.

  • Very Nice Job. Having Had A Rough Time In Public Schools And Being Sent To A Court Ordered Boarding School. I Always Have Identified With This Song And As I Believe The System Is And Always Has Been Terible For Thinking Individuals I Chose Not To Subject My Children To The Abuse And Homeschooled Them.

  • @sbf8680able Oh, she's cute, but isn't she married though?

  • @burningstarry1 ..i think it was maybe inspired by his time at a boarding school, which he didn't like very much.... but i'm not sure....'and then they sent me away'...i think those lyrics are from that.. :)

  • I love this song and supertramp, but can someone people interpret the song in detail for me? thanks!

  • You did an AMAZING job with this video.

  • Why did it take me so long to find this song?
