Brian Fallon performs a cover of the Replacements "Left of the Dial"

"I don't think there would be a Gaslight Anthem without the Replacements," Fallon said during his recent performance at SPIN's NYC office, before opening with an acoustic cover of the Minnesota indie band's "Left of the Dial," from 1985's Tim. Indeed, Fallon's rough-hewn vocals bring to mind a young Paul Westerberg.

But the tune holds another meaning for the singer: "I always thought that last line in there -- 'If I don't see you again for a long long while / I'll try to find you left of the dial' -- meant looking at a radio station as a place where you find friends."

  • Well the song is great, first off. The cover isn't perfect, but the best music is imperfect.

The heart and the feeling is what matters

  • Again, you're just getting defensive mate,i never once gave an opinion on Brian Fallons singing capabilities and don't patronise me on being 'blind' to who is or has a bad singing moment, especially when done live.I will however state right now that yes, sometimes his voice is a little 'off' at times...i never argued it wasn't.He's obviously doing something right though is he not?

I still reject your opinion on Chuck/Chris being so though. The 'professional' dig was just sarcasm.Punk rock IS my life

  • I think there's a lot of people on here missing Brian's point

  • does he have like a frankenstein skull tattoo? haha

  • not perfect bot not bad

  • People make me laugh..saying he changed the version or didnt cover it perfect. People have individual and unique styles, he chose his own style and I think pulled it off great.

If you dont like it, then dont listen to it..lol.

  • Love GA.

Why is he ad-libbing the lyrics? Watched a few other live versions of Brian covering this song as well and he does the same.

Surely if he was that influenced by the song it wouldn't need changing?

  • singer of my current favorite band covering a song from what used to be my favorite band, awesome. perfectly imperfect!

  • I would be the first to criticize but I think you did fine justice to a great song. Oh I know a lot but I don't know who you are as I stopped listening to the radio the very day the Replacements broke up. Nah.. hyperbole.
