Heavy spring rains and snowmelt led to devastating floods along the Mississippi River in May 2011. Landsat 5 flew over the Mississippi River on May 10, 2011, giving a distinct view of the extraordinary extent of the flooding. This was only eigt days after the Army Corps of Engineers began blasting holes in earthen levees near Cairo, Illinois, when the river reached a depth of 61 feet.

The extent of the 2011 flooding is compared with the same locations in April 2010

  • love the work here

  • great video thanks

  • you have some great stuff here

  • some great inforamtion here thanks

  • really informative and interesting

  • First of all, STOP building your houses in the FLOODPLAIN. DUH. Second, why can't we install some LARGE but SIMPLE pumping stations along the flood-prone rivers and send the surplus water WEST where it is needed in Arizona and California? We have the technology, and it wouldn't cost much (compared to other gov't programs). Rights of way for piping are already in place along highways. Where is the political will to DO something?

  • well done thank you

  • LOL ironic how god is killing off the ignorant bible belt whites and blacks... As an athiest, i pray the lord kills off some of the white racist and uneducated thug blacks in mississippi. The only thing that bothers me is that my tax payer money is going to help these degenrates recover. Upside in alabama over 100 people are not going to recieve my payer tax money....AMEN.
