John Adams's first opera Nixon In China, produced by Peter Sellars, with libretto by Alice Goodman, about the visit of Richard Nixon to China in 1972, where he met with Mao Zedong and other Chinese officials.
Act III Opening -
On the Americans' final night in Beijing, it has become apparent to all that there will be no great breakthrough -- the Shanghai Communique is no more than words, a face-saving formula for the world's press to buy into. The main characters look back over their lives -- the Maos and the Nixons look back to the struggles of their early years together.

  • I still can't get over how beautiful the dance is in this!

It's this combination of frightening militarism and gorgeous showmanship that I believe is so characteristic of communist China. The use of the gun just seems like a natural extension of the existing tension. Brilliant!
