This simple endgame study I composed shows some very basic concepts of Rook vs. Pawn endgames. Black to play and draw. The key idea is to cross in front of the pawn, to shoulder off the White King, before advancing. If White tries to bring his king around the long way Black draws by one tempo. If Black tries to promote the pawn right away instead of crossing over he loses by one tempo.

  • Thank you very much. I hope to see some more endgames. Again, thank you very much for your time and effort.

  • This was your first video watched !? Cool.

  • how about rook vs 4 pawns.

    i lost to the pawns

  • 4 pawns could quite easily be better than a rook depending on the health of the pawns. Especially if there are connected pawns. In many cases only 2 connected pawns beat a rook (such as if they both reach the 6th rank).

  • Matt-Rock,

are you actively pushing your UCSF rating? I know you crossed 2000 a while back.

  • Excellent. Thanks.

  • Very cool. I've been studying Josh Waitzkin's endgames off Chessmaster. It seems that I've skipped a few steps in my rook study. I went from RvR+P without understanding the drawing concept in your video.

Thanks a lot for posting it, I'm looking forward to watching the rest of them.

  • Not to be rude or anything... trust me I liked your video... but you kept saying (excuse the spelling) Zookfang.... I was tought and it is said in Oklahoma that is supposed to be zookszwong. I liked the video... :D

  • Truly an excellent video. Thanks.

  • Thks for uploading. My endings suck. Cant mk sense even from basic ending books cos they only give sequence of moves & very little else. Oh...these moves were played & game was drawn. Correct sequence should hv been like these. Sez nothing abt why it was wrong or why its correct or what consideratns were made etc. Friends of a fairly advanced std werent too helpful either- endings=commonsense. So thks to pple like you & jrobichess im beginning to see a glimmer of light & hope for myself.

  • I love your work,we watch your videos every day.... we send you a lot of kisses from serbia! :)

  • great job!

  • Thank you for your YouTubeness! Very fun to watch!

  • thank you mr. pullin, for addressing the most vital part of the chess game.

  • I will second that, Youtube is a fantastic medium for improving your chess, as shown by GreenCastle's fantastic video. Endgames are a weak point of my game, mainly because I find thinking about them dull, but this video really makes the concepts come to life.
