This is the fourth part of my Mint-A-Thon series. We are going to have lots of fun with this operating system from installation to customisation! I will attempt to cover every important detail. I am going to break packages and rebuild them if necessary! So strap yourselves in, this is going to be one heck of a wild ride!

  • Thank you for the mint tutorial as always good fun at the same time as learning.

It would be nice if you could do a video on downloading and installing KX Studio onto this mint addition.

    Many thanks..Steve England UK. :-).

  • @jazzey69 I will look into that for you... Thanks for your valued feedback!

  • Well, MATE is a fork of Gnome 2, so you can do most of the things you normally do with Gnome 2. Most Gnome 2 Extensions will work on this. But for those who want their effects this is the way to go for you if you wish to remain on Mint.

Have you tried Ubuntu -Tweak with this? I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.

  • @fatriff I may try that in a later episode... just wanted to touch base on the basics first...

  • @LinuxSpatry My mistake, somehow I thought he referred to Gnome 2 with "Gnome classic" but of course that's not the case (I find that dumb though, since it isn't really THE classic version).

Unfortunately Mate isn't quite Gnome 2 yet.

    I'm actually still using Ubuntu 10.10. I want my Gnome 2. :(

  • @deggis4 yes but Mate, (the fork of Gnome 2) can coexist with Gnome 3

  • @Live4TheGame1 Gnome 3 and 2 can't really co-exist...

  • @Live4TheGame1

Mint 12 final release comes with the option for MGSE,Gnome Classic, and MATE. A nice amount of options :)

  • Congratulations for your work!

  • Yes very useful! Informative too! Dood, you didn't have as much espresso this time - no sharp quips and the energy levels drop. If you aren't careful we might just think you're a lowly human like the rest of us *grinz*

AWESOME STUFF! Keep them Penguins a rollin!

  • Mate is in alpha, very buggy

  • Honestly I might just Install the real Gnome 3 shell. Mate isn't Gnome 2. I don't really like it at all. I think they should have just gone with the option to use Gnome 3 or Gnome classic that didn't look stupid like it does on Ubuntu. Most likely just going to install the REAL Gnome 3 on Mint 12 whenever the final comes out and unetbootin updates to support it. Excellent Tutorial though Spatry! :) I loved that you took the time to welcome all the newcomers.
