KTEH Classic Clips offers these timely and memorable video clips from our vault. In this clip from 1997, Jimmy Carter discusses his negotiating techniques between Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian prime minister Anwar Sadat.
@djvft50 Just so we're clear I don't completely disagree with your sentiment. Terrorists shouldn't be rewarded for their actions, but we shouldn't just brush them aside as loonies either. Understanding why they do what they do at the very least can prevent the creation of more terrorists. By aggressive policies I don't just mean warfare either. Some of the trade sanctions the west has enacted have killed more people than some of the air and missile strikes. Clinton was, IMO, the worse offender.
@djvft50 I dunno. I reasoned with a few. But I kicked the teeth out of just as many others.
You have to judge based on the situation, understand motives. There was a time I was considered a bully. That's because my idiotic school mates didn't understand (or maybe they did all too well) there were certain things they could say or do to get to thrash them. Don't call a six foot two inch woman a 'man dyke' or enact aggressive policies on other nations then act shocked when they become violent.
All you have to do is crash a few helicopters in the sand, and your done....when are politicians going to realize that you can't negotiate with terrorist. Everyone went to school and there was a bully of some sort. Was anyone ever able to reason with the bully, or did someone finally wind up having to kick the shit out of him?
Lacking detail? Sorry, but this IS youtube. There are limits to 500 characters.
That said- There may be some truth to what you say if you were to read a lopsided Likud version of history, but believe me, for those of us who lived through this and followed the negotiations day after day... Carter made the difference. And made it happen. The two sides were NOT budging.
And it did not make Israel 'look' weak. It made them look mature and responsible. Today, they should learn more from it.
the arabs were beaten and defeated and were looking for a way to end the war anyway... it was a ceasefire that turned into a treaty with a one sided relinquishment of the israeli government of the sinai desert... it should have been an unconditional surrender. camp David agreement was a dissaster which made israel look weak.. which we aren't we're just influenced and stupid government
