This is a US Army promotional video for its installation at Neu Ulm Germany. New Ulm was the home of 56th FACOM until 1991 due to the signing of the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Agreement (INF) on December 8, 1987 with the Soviet Union. The Pershing missile is thought to have been the straw to break the Soviet Union's back. This was a "model community" and our home. The community Command Sergeant Major (CSM) James Flandreau is seen many times in this video. He ran that community with great passion and love. Neu Ulm has a special place in our hearts!

  • I still live here in Neu-Ulm (I'm born here :-) ) It was so awesome back then. I can remember how I was always in a bus, driving home after school. And so the bus drove past the Wiley barracks here. You can always see the army guys playing baseball, and I was like "Awesome! Just like in the movies" ;-D Because of you guys, I began to play american football here in germany. The Neu-Ulm Barracudas :-) Some of you played there, too. I was in the junior team back then ;-) Wow, I'm 30 years old today

  • I was there in 82/83 Wow what a place!

  • @DarkGeena I don't know of any, sorry.

  • I was born here, i live here...I LOVE VORFELD !

  • @bugwit 4/5th 1st ID was the unit where we had to have field grade Article 15s administered since our own BN commander was in Stuttgart, so I spent some time next door at your unit. Oh, and I agree the video didn't look like the "dumpy" post I remembered. They must have made all those improvements after we left. I used to volunteer for the dunking booth at the Ger/Am fest on post and overall, loved my time in Neu Ulm! Funny how no one saw theend of the Cold War in 85, then it just ended...

  • @bugwit Thank you :) Is there any kind of archive of soldiers who have been stationed around Neu Ulm then?

  • @Golda46 I was very surprised to learn how popular Country music is in Germany! I heard some great country bands there!

  • Continuing-but speaking for myself, I loved Germany and was glad to be there, and prepared to defend it from the Soviets if it came to that. I still love Germany and I see it as our second closest ally after the UK.

  • @Lintflas Most Germans ignored us, some hated us and said rude things. Some thanked us for being there, so we saw it all. It was very hard for me to get to know Germans very well - they seemed very insular - stuck to their family and life-long friends and not eager to get to know us. We Americans were young and on our own for the first time in our lives and drank a lot and acted like idiots. We knew that we were the source of most violent crime in Ulm.

  • @DarkGeena THere were Army bases at Neu Ulm, shown here, Goppingen. Schabisch Gmund, Heidenheim and Stuttgart.
