Well, the sound could be better - but not the line-up (and the music's mighty fine as well):

- Graham Bond: organ
- John McLaughlin: guitar
- Jack Bruce: bass
- Ginger Baker: drums.

3 songs - the first with vocals by Duffy Power. Recorded July 9, 1963 for a BBC radio broadcast.

I even found close-matching footage: the 1965 film "Gonks Go Beat" features all 4 musicians (plus Dick Heckstall-Smith on sax). As the announcer says at the end, "Ole!"

  • This is great!! Thank you for posting this. My only problem is that I can't really hear Jack. But, it's a great piece of musical history.

  • I tried my damnest to beef up the sound (would you believe?).

  • GBO kick asssssssssssss!!

  • well, there goes my taste for pedantry...

  • Thanks for your response - much appreciated! Just to be informative (pedantic)...

After just checking these out, Klooks Kleek has Heckstall-Smith, but not McLaughlin. And there are 3 tracks with John on the 1971 Solid Bond release. Took about a half-hour to find them both.

But it's fun digging these things out. I'm currently toying with putting up some Danny Thompson Trio (BBC broadcast) and/or 2008 Juan Les Pins festival material (a great concert).

  • Now if McLaughlin would just do a tour reproducing this stage set ..well ... thanks, this is a rare gem.

  • TV at it's best ! funny show ! GBO is absolutely smashing ! Cheerio old chaps !

  • This has the wrong soundtrack of course, the original film had The Graham Bond ORGANisation playing "Harmonica" and it is a shame we can't see that.

  • Re: mention that McLaughlin is NOT in this. Saxist Dick Heckstall-Smith replaced McLaughlin in the band, which further confirms walterkolosky1's comment. And I believe this is available on DVD.

  • @cameltooth1 That is what I thought too.

  • better clip of this and much better sound here on the GONKSGOBEAT CLIP posted by'beyondthebeat' see right hand column fo alternative clips.
