John Amaechi is the first NBA player to speak publicly about being gay. In 2007, three years after retiring from pro basketball, he became one of only six male professional athletes in the four major U.S. sports to come out.

It does the LGBT community a DISSERVICE for athletes, actors, and other people of power or influence to "COME OUT" after the popularity or rise of their careers is over! What change can a retired NBA athlete make in the NBA?:NONE! How about someone "COMING OUT" when they have everything in their court and take the risk of loosing it all. That's the true meaning of a role model and a hero. That's like someone saying that he/she will go to war after the battle is over. It makes no sense!
