Actually, had this been a real trial, the judge would not have even allowed the back & forth between Cruise & Nicholson, and would not have especially allowed Nicholson's Oscar-clip monologue, for reasons governed by the rules of evidence. This is where counsel would normally raise an objection. All the melodrama, of course, was done for cinematic purposes, not meant to portray a realistic court testimony. Loved the scene though.

@blkplauge you got it right bp - i think what MANY people miss is the lines BEFORE the great line ... he ASKS daniel caffey, "You Want Answers?" ... Caffey the "Rear in the Gear" Guy replies (when he damn well knows the answer), "I think I'm entitled ..." Then JESSUP ORDERS CAFFEY, "YOU WANT ANSWERS!!!" - an IMPERATIVE - an ORDER to Caffey ... Caffey THEN begs, "I Want the Truth!!!" ... then comes the great lines of how Caffey, Weinberg, and Co.sit back in judgment of his authority

Not to hate on this part at ALL, but I've always wondered why "You can't handle the truth!" is one of the most beloved movie quotes of all time, when everything he says after ( and Jack's delivery) is WAY more epic, imo :)

You know... I'm always bitching about now liking this-and-that, I always have complaints about society, how things go, rules and everything. And I stick to those complaints. I quite don't like anything.

But, then again, I'm always aware of the line you pointed out. The world is made of walls. There's more out there than we'll ever know or imagine, and perhaps the world couldn't ever be otherwhise than it is. It's what humans are.
