I took several classes with Professor Jonathan Mills in college. He invented the Stiquito platform (shown here) and coauthored a robotics textbook in which you build them. I have yet to make one of my own but I have the book so hopefully I will soon. Mills is currently doing some pretty exciting research at IU with a new analog architecture. It's supposed to be a general purpose analog computer. When I was there the most we had got out of it was xor but it seemed promising.

Cool, I moved to using flexinol to activate an array of levers in real time using a PC. Stiquito really provided the "hello world" for it.
