Летом 1943г. к немцам попал аварийный ЛА-5ФН, с незначитильными повреждениями. Машина была отремонтирована и подвергнута всесторонним испытаниям в Hаучно-исследовательском центре люфтваффе в Рехлине. Проводил их летчик-испытатель Ганс-Вернер Лерхе. Кадры хроники, запечатлили этот "лавочкин" с фашистскими опознавательными знаками.

@deseryve you have it the wrong way round, the fw190 was preffered on the western front, the 109 the East.

Not only the captors' impressions were wrong. In the Battle of Britain R.A.F. pilots thought the Spitfire II was slower but more maneuverable than the Bf-109E. Just the opposite was actually the case, but only Rechlin test pilots believed it. On the one hand because the Merlin engine was carburetted and lagged in accelleration, on the other because the average Luftwaffe pilot was unwilling to push the monospar wing as hard as it could be turned.
