The House debates the Paycheck Fairness Act. Although the wage gap between men and women has narrowed since the passage of the landmark Equal Pay Act in 1963, gender-based wage discrimination remains a problem for women in the U.S. workforce. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women only make 77 cents for every dollar earned by a man. The Institute of Women's Policy Research found that this wage disparity will cost women anywhere from $400,000 to $2 million over a lifetime in lost wages. Furthermore, loopholes created by courts and weak sanctions in the law have allowed many employers to avoid liability for engaging in gender-based pay discrimination. The Paycheck Fairness Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), will strengthen the Equal Pay Act and close the loopholes that have allowed employers to avoid responsibility for discriminatory pay. Rep. Rosa DeLauro speaks in favor.

"The woman were paid on average $0.75 to each male $1.00"

No, the entire population of women MADE 75% of what the male population earned. They were paid the same, there are just more working men than women.

  • so basically what she says is: "Why can't it be work related (merit based) and not sex related when you get payed?"

Where the hell was she when "positive discrimination" against white males came in? Why can't being hired also be merit based? Instead if sex or race related.

She's a hypocrite. All feminist politicians are. When men are discriminated against, thats "equality" When women are it's "systematic oppression".

    Go figure.

  • fuck nancy pelosi!

  • On July 31, 2008 All the Democrats along with 14 conscientious Republicans voted and Passed HR 1338 the Fairness Paycheck Act.

The vast majority of the Republicans voted AGAINST this bill!! The woman were paid on average $0.75 to each male $1.00

The Republicans talk a good game on TV when they say they support the American People ... but the way they vote irrefutably prove that they lie.

Let's give the Democrats a Greater Majority In Congress by kicking the Republicans out of office.

  • Yikes! I'd give this one more than equal just so I wouldn't have to look at her. She looks like "Moe" from the "Three Stooges."
