@alexanderismyboy the very fact artists like Neil Young reflect on experiences that "stop one in his tracks" Good? but oft times sad...keeps a lot of us going. The sacrifice of revisiting such soul "strangling" states of mind...becomes timeless, as being recorded....goes on and on connecting and thru through a sad way finds an affinity with so many others who live and experience...what comes about. I am thankful Neil decided to share such regret

@steele917 I lost my fiance when I was 21 and she was 19, almost 33 years ago. I still cry. This song brings it right back to the surface. I feel for you too. Neil Young does strike a chord with his words.

i love that his voice has hardly changed in 40 years

Not flattering, visually or musically, but one of his most awesome breks -
'to give a love , you gotta live a love," still comes through clear as a bell.

love the synth at like 1:15....haha!

@amberberglund Amber I'm hoping you are just missing the point. This song (to me) is about how loss of a loved one and the resultant depression can damage a man's outlook and relationships. By say 'a man needs a maid' he's saying he doesn't need a woman. He had one, lost her and it hurts like hell. And it's true. Most of us commenting have been there and felt the same. I hope someone loves you that much.

Neil has that gift of going right to the heart , this song speaks to all in its own way , I always felt like this song spoke right to me , such incredible talent , and to sing it so well at his age , he still blows away everyone else in the business , I love this guy .
I lost my Wife this past May. The song-the lyrics strikes deep, to my heart. the regrets...having taken things for granted. I had to break down a door, only to find her...Gone in a moments time-before I'd had a chance....and so her final portait arrives each time I hear..."when will I see you again"? And I keep playing the song....god keep thee in his care June.

I'm so sorry for you. Music is so powerful, it helps through the roughest times.
Many people are taking things for granted... untill it's too late..

Neil, if you ever read this, I have to tell you that I love this song, although I haven't listened to it in a very long time.
Exploring forgotten music is part of my recovery from brain trauma, probably much less severe than Neil suffered. His was like a near fatal car crash, and mine was like a skinned knee.
I wonder what prompted the writing of this song?
"Of all the things, I've lost, I miss my mind the most."
Syroste...thanks for posting.

A small correction, this song is called : "A man needs a maid" not a mate. Thanks for uploading!
