Researchers have claimed that they have been able to record particles traveling at speeds faster than that of light, throwing open once again the debate on the possibility of time travel.

According to scientists at the Gran Sasso facility in central Italy, years-long experiments showed that subatomic particles known as neutrinos breached the speed of light, which is long established as the cosmic speed limit. The new finding goes against the grain of Einsteinian theory of special relativity.

Scientists will present evidence of their new finding on Friday at CERN, the European nuclear research facility.

If the finding is true, it will have far-reaching implications as the hitherto accepted precept was that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light.

  • @Viciious95 aDUHHHH, ofcourse you go back in time when you exceed light speed, now make your statment relavent to the debate space case

  • @DiogenesofCalgary you are clueless, destroy the big bang theory!??! WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE???!

Atleast explain your self fully before you make a statement like that. Shame on you

  • What I think happens is that when the particle is accelerated to C (light speed) it breaks through time and space, it vanishes into hyperspace. It will then skip over a portion of time and space and reappear at a further location instantly. Making it seem like it traveled faster then light. It's an illusion, an object can surpass light but only at the cost of leaving our observable universe. Einstein was right. Matter can not travel faster then light, it must teleport in order to surpass it.

  • They have used the speed of light in dark matter which has an index of refraction approx 1.000025 (rounded up). So the real maximum speed of light that they should have used would be faster than the neutrino's traveled. How Opera will make it's name is by confirming the existence of dark matter and providing a measurement of one of it's fundamental properties, ie. the index of refraction of dark matter. This is only the tip of the iceberg. This will destroy the big bang theory in the end.

  • See i have dreams which comes true..now is this someting can travel..faster than light..we dont know.. i am trying to investigate1111

  • I thought FiOS was faster than the speed of light.. @.@

  • We may be able to stop hitler in another parallel universe after all

  • according to Einstein's mass dilation, if it was physically possible to travel faster than c (roughly 3x10^8 m/s) then the object, according to a stationary observer relative to the object would have an infinite mass, then according to Newton's 2nd law of motion (F=ma) the object would require an infinite amount of force (or energy according to Einsteins famous e=mc^2) to move it. This amount of force or energy is impossible to acquire to impart on an object.

  • the actual C is just the upper limit speed of phisical interactions, during ages is possible to be replaced by manny other particles, like posible now days the neutrino.

  • Einstein himslef explaind that he use the speed of light as the constant C only because the electromagnetism domain was well know on his time and they need a practicle value to work with.
