I wouldn't click crop at the end, because that deletes any data outside the frame. It's better to just right click -> cancel. (Unless your intention was to crop in the first place.)
Also, instead of the crop tool, you can simply turn off visibility for the text, select the background layer, and pull in the ruler guides. They should automatically snap to the middle.
You can also turn on Smart Guides, which shows the center lines when you move an object over them.
