I'd say if anyone worships a tree, Christmas or otherwise, they are spot on, that would be a sin because it'd be idol worship.

However this passage is speaking to carving wooden images and covering them with gold and silver to make idol gods as was custom in pagan worship in those days.

A cross reference is Isaiah 40:18-20
