To make way for the new Pittsburgh Penguins Arena, the old St Francis Hospital was imploded on March 22, 2008. The Mayor was quoted as saying, "we gotta let 'em know we can still blow **** up!" (just kidding-that was a line from the movie Rush Hour)
To quote Mark Houser article in The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, "The St. Francis Health System had bought the 136-bed Uptown hospital in 1992. But the network faltered. Central closed in 2000. UPMC Health System bought the flagship St. Francis Medical Center in Lawrenceville in 2002 and is transforming it into a new Children's Hospital." So not all is lost to hockey. Though it is sad that St Francis Health System closed in 2002...
