I wrote the song "Awit ng Tagumpay" (Anthem of Victory) in 1985 upon returning to the Philippines and finding the people forlorn in spirits due to the weighty preceding events that led to the First People Power Revolution that I was to witness the following year. The song speaks of the courage, valor and faith of a people desiring a better tomorrow with freedom and justice. Before 1986, there were only the examples of Gandhi and Martin Luther King as remote guides that significant political change can happen non-violently. In overturning a 20-year old dictatorial regime from their midst and doing so with the unity of the people as their only weapon, this tropical country (which many people could not even readily point to on the map) gave the world another hope. We should never underestimate a people's spirit. Sometimes we forget the lessons of history.
Oh yes, Congratulations, Egypt! May this spirit help you through your history.
