  • There is a major misunderstanding to your comment (besides it's very sarcastic tone). Domokos never intended to get rich and famous with it. His inspiration and motivation was his inner desire to solve a mathematical problem that existed for years. Maybe you should broaden your horizon a bit. Solving fundamental mathematical problems is/was/will be the key to technical process.

  • (cont.) the point is, we never know when some, theoretical mathematical discovery could be used for something. NOt saying that this qill tell us anything about global warming, of course, but an explanation of global warming could for example quite plausibly rely on some argument to do with a single stable equilibrium. So, you never know :) The more so called "useless" problems we solve, the more likely we are to discover something that is actually applicable somewhere down the line.

  • Your object, depending on how it is placed and its dimensions, would have two or possibly three resting positions. The object shown here has only one resting position. The only weight is that of the homogenous material the object is made of, and it has no concave surfaces. It is not nearly as simple as you are making it sound.

  • @TheOriginalEntz it doesnt however have the same resting position each time unlike the

    gomboc

  • Take a cylinder and cut it in half. Now stick a prism to the center flat part which does not stick out further than the original cylinder. It will right itself so long as you don't tip it so that the tip of the prism is more than 90 degrees from resting position.

  • does anybody recall a concept that has been more milked-out than this? i still get emails from the gomboc (itself) telling me how good it is, with riveting news like how the latest numbered gomboc child has been gratefully accepted at some prestigious institution. it even pompously compared itself to the rubik cube, which astounds me. instead of attempting to drip-feed the world his extra-super-special creation, rubik simply 'got it out there.' it is accessible and people can learn something.

  • @MediaThoughts agreed, this guy has fun with science most people have fun with T.V.

  • my crocs do the same!!!

  • @gobacktorussia

The special thing is, that unlike to a tumbler, the weight is equally distributed within the object. It always returns to its stable position only because of its shape, not its weight distribution (like a tumbler does). HTH

  • can anyone explain this to me? obviously this could be easily achieved with a simple shape using weight... obviously this is demonstrating how a weight is not necessary given the correct shape but is weight not a crucial factor in this? what is the mathematical problem that this object has solved?

  • a magyar a legokosabb nemzet... itt az újabb ékes bizonyíték... :P

  • Yeah! Made in Hungary!
