Select some notes using the select tool(as you see me do,) and then hit CTRL+C. Then, when you're ready to paste, hit CTRL+V.

Im having trouble with just the melody of the song

That takes a lot of practice to get down. You can start by trying to duplicate someone else's riff by ear, that way you kind of learn what goes into it. Eventually you can start to write your own.
