In this highlight from December 2008, Tim Ferriss, author of The Four Hour Work Week, recalls his experience as a foreign exchange student in Japan and reveals the difficulty he had learning the language. Ferriss, who offers tips on overcoming language barriers, says, "It's often times what you do -- not how you do it -- that is the determining factor."

-----

Ferriss embraced the principle that "fear is your friend" while overcoming his trepidation of swimming, dancing and learning new languages. Learn his methods to rethink "false constructs and untested assumptions." - The Entertainment Gathering 2008

  • change the video title to "Learn Japanese with That guy who wanted to be raped at 8 am by a japanese woman"

  • we had a joke, while I was an exchange student. all you need to learn a foreign language is alcohol. and it's true. you loose all your brakes and fear that you will not say it right. no one cares. no one sais it right.

  • @animejoao you need to learn both... sad but true... as well as katakana obviously. Get James Heisig's books " remembering the kanji" for kanji learning. You'll save years of frustration. That's how I learned them and retained them after years of trying and actually achieving a master's degree in Japanese language by constantly relearning them whenever exams took place. Now I just own them... :) Japanese is a great langage to learn. Kudos on trying.

  • hello guys i want to start learning japanese but tim made me confuse, in japanese should i ignore learning hiragana first and just focus in kanji all the way, most people start with hiragana first and them later kanji, what do you people think that i should do. thanks.

  • I want to learn to speak german

  • The best way to deal with foreign languages is to bully everyone else into speaking yours. Apparently you Americans are quite good at it... -.-

  • @LokiClock i also see where it tries adding english words for the japanese words making a bunch of gibberish come up.. STILL. please rape me, please write me, whatever it may be the title would have been better named something other than it is.

  • this is not helping me learn french

  • @boomunderscore0 If you turn on the subtitles, you'll find he clearly said "please write me at eight a_m_ do."

  • His Japanese pronunciation is AWESOME, I'm so frikkin jealous!! :P

  • he's right. material over method. this is why in time online education will become our primary form of education.
