Dr. Tom Sullivan, a practicing physician and chief strategic officer for DrFirst, talks about the impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and meaningful use on health information technology (HIT). He explains the relationship MEDITECH and DrFirst share, providing an automated e-Prescribing solution which will help customers meet the criteria of meaningful use through medication reconciliation and real-time availability of a patient's medication summary at both the time of admission and discharge.

Dr. Sullivan also comments on MEDITECH customers leading the way in new HIT projects. Through a federated-decentralized health information exchange model, South Shore Hospital (Weymouth, MA) is sharing data with its participating physicians' offices using HL7 standards such as the Continuity of Care Document (CCD). MEDITECH is the first vendor to successfully support a CCD project, and has been working with DrFirst to improve the information and capabilities available in the CCD.
