Testing a Theory: Earth Leakage ["Electrical Jobs" / Electrician / "Electrical Training"]

Dave Austin investigates the theory that Earth Leakage Currents (Protective Conductor Currents) may cause unwanted tripping of an RCD. He also investigates whether the high integrity earthing requirements of Regulation Group 543.7 of 17th Edition needs to be considered for domestic ring final circuits.

Dave visits an older property and measures the milli-ampere earth leakage currents generated by different home appliances and considers what the implications may be if the house were re-wired to the 17th Edition!

What a load of class 2 nonsense its quicker to pat test the class one item. Or back at the board

@festeradamz hi, we did it this way because its a lot more visual and easier to test appliances in place and operating fully - sometimes something which is not so easy to do with a PAT tester. Would i be right in saying that if your replacing the board a p.i.r should be carried out prior to replacement to check the installation. Any appliances with high earth leakage will effect the day to day operation granted but if they had such high leakage they shouldnt be in operation. Im not sure i see what you are trying to achieve here.

And? Their power supplies containing capacitors, which give such leakage to the earth wire. Nothing new, just fooling of the society.
