This is my first video making use of the extended time limit here on Youtube. It used to be up to 10 minutes in length but the time has now increased up to 15 minutes in length.

In this video, I talk about and show you the SEGA Mega Drive Genesis clones made by different companies that failed to emulate the original SEGA Mega Drive Genesis console. In this video I talk about the two Radica plug n' play Mega Drive consoles that only feature games built in without a cartridge slot and I also talk about the AtGames SEGA Mega Drive console which has 15 games built in and does feature a cartridge slot for playing back your cartridge library of Mega Drive Genesis games.

The Sega Mega Drive/Genesis was brought back to life by the USA company Radica Games Limited under its Play TV collection. It consists of a classic Mega Drive/Genesis joypad with a video cable ready for plugging into a television to play a variety of games. Some models actually condense the Mega Drive/Genesis system onto a single chip, allowing a cartridge slot to be added. As of March 2006, there are at least seven versions of the gadget. They can run off a few AA batterys without an AC or DC adapter needed. As far as graphics are concerned, they're emulated perfectly but when it comes to audio, sadly, it sounds rough and distorted very similar to a stock SEGA Mega Drive Genesis model 2 console without modification. Also Radica for what ever reason has muted one of the sound chips in the hardware, the 8-bit SN76489 PSG sound chip is not amplified properly resulting in half of the audio content being absent and not heard.

Announced in 2008, as the "Firebox" aka "SEGA Genesis 4"; A remodeled "Sega Mega Drive/Genesis" console was designed to spark life back into retro-gaming by rekindling the flame, the Genesis Firecore was manufactured by AtGames. The system doesn't have an expansion port, which made the Firecore incompatible with the Sega CD, and is also incompatible with Sega 32X, Power Base Converter and Virtua Racing. It was released in 2009 as the "Firecore": In Europe, a version of the Firecore is marketed by Blaze and is simply called the Sega Mega Drive which is the one that I have in this video. The Blaze Mega Drive comes with 15 built-in games rather than the Firecore's 20. Both the AtGames Firecore and Blaze Mega Drive Genesis's come with two 6 button contollers with the same end fitting as the original SEGA controllers so the controllers could be played on the real Mega Drive Genesis console and it also means that you can play your official SEGA controllers on the AtGames Mega Drive Genesis console. Once again only mono sound is outputted and the audio is completely terrible! May be even worse than the Radica plug n' plays. The audio is very slow (and we're not talking PAL 50hz speed here) the music is very slow and it is completely out of sync which sounds like dying batterys in an old cassette player. The graphics on the other hand are very sharp like a super-video out cable being used although some pixels and sprites on the screen still appear to be smudged a little.

These emulated SEGA Mega Drive Genesis consoles are good to buy for a present to somebody that isn't really into the Mega Drive Genesis and doesn't care much for the audio of it, but you wouldn't want to use them for your everyday gaming. I still highly recommend getting an original model 1 or a model 2 SEGA Mega Drive Genesis.

In this video I also do a side by side comparison between the AtGames Mega Drive console against an original SEGA Mega Drive Genesis console from SEGA. You will see and hear the big difference!

For the best audio, watch this video in 480p or higher quality.

Enjoy!

  • Model 2 can't do stereo :P

  • @xan1242 Yes it can.

  • I don't mean to offend you. Of course this is my personal opinion and other people too but anyway. I'm trying to say the SOUND comparison between the two consoles

you reminded me that. That's all!

  • @kolossaeis You didn't offend me and of course it's your personal opinion, but this wasn't meant to be a comparison video, i'm sure everybody would agree that this thing in my video sounds completely terrible and I just wasn't sure what you meant by comparing MK (Mega Drive) with MK (Super Nintendo) and how that was related to this.

  • @Adam060756 i dred having to tell her that I appreciate her well meaning retro games gesture, but she wasted $50 of her hard earned cash, and she could have bought herself nice clothes or something with it LOLL. seriously.. Sega.. you fucked up big time..

  • @Adam060756 Hmm..interesting.. thanks man. btw, have you got the "newest"version from K mart here in Aus which has disposed of the PAL/NTSC button which is apparently is obsolete now,or another? just cause as I've seen, that one which has no region switch SUPPOSEDLY has had most of the fuck-ups rectified especially compatibility (but sound still remains stright from the rubbish bin. LOL. just the thing is,cause the Mrs. baught me one of these little cunts for Xmas now & i yet to try it

  • @killerOfAmericans SF2 cartridge SHOULD play on this horrible thing, I can't be 100% positive because I know Sonic 3 & Knuckles does not play but Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles separately does play.

  • the real thing is better of course

  • @Adam060756 hey man, just wanted to know (if you can tell me) will amnoriginal SF2 cartidge in the atgames one, would it work ok? I don't expect the best, or even GOOD souns at that.. but I am willing to compromise,as long as I can play the game itself..cause frankly, when it comes to the glorious SF2..I reckon NOTHING beats the original stand up arcade one,for perfection.but thats another story..long as the atgames one works with it,then thats aight with me. pls let me know Cheers!

  • I noticed something with your Blaze model MD.

Not only does it miss the PAL/NTSC Switch, but it also lacks proper 'monofication' of the sound. What would go through as right panning, is missing in your model and not in my console.

Of course the original is better. That's why I want it so bad! I just have to go with the Blaze version for now :(

  • so buy a real megadrive? problem solved

  • So bad i didn't see tha video before buying the x games in 1. Audio is shit, i can't play on it :(
