New yok times wrote; "Gene Kelly is doing some of the fanciest gymnastic dancing of his career in "The Pirate"—and he's good, very good, indeed. As the strolling thespian, Serafin, who masquerades as the bold pirate Macoco to capture the fancy of the fair maiden, Manuela, and prevent her marriage to the flabby and stuffy Don Pedro Vargas, Mr. Kelly scales balconies and swings through the air with the authority and grace exhibited by the late Douglas Fairbanks. When he is whirling about the screen, serenading beautiful Caribbean damsels, or vigorously performing a ballet depicting piratical exploits that is brilliantly photographed in flaming shades of red and punctuated with yellow bursts of flashing gun powder, "The Pirate" achieves the pinnacle of spectacle."

  • @NJYankee55 You think only women looked at this man!? :o) And I agree he did not need to take off all of his clothes to be sexy. I've been collecting musicals from the 30s to the 60s for a few years now and I really enjoy them. I grew up with them and with DVDs it made it possible to buy them.

  • Yes, he was sexy, talented, classy, intelligent, and beautifully built. That's the example of manhood the women of his day were fortunate enough to be able to gaze upon. He was sexy without being crude and/or vulgar, and he kept his clothes on (good god, what was sexier than those shorts??? Look at those thighs! ). Not too many male entertainers today that can say the same!

  • @kellyakabilly I've heard the same story that Mayer wanted it destroyed because it was deemed too erotic of a scene and the censorship board would have likely rejected it. Strangely, the film was not preserved even by Minnelli. I doubt it exists at this point; its been about 64 years!

  • @moonshinemaude LMAO! Now that freakin' hilarious!

  • @WillScarlet16 I know I have heard the story about Vincent's being gay or it isn't a secret but I did hear the story of her being jealous of Gene on how much time they spent together I don't think Gene was gay but he certainly was and that's probably why she got jealous of him I mean any wife not even a star like Judy Garland even though she was a down to earth person anybody would get extremely jealous with a gay husband flirting with other men.

  • I've heard that Judy got VERY suspicious of how close Gene and Vincente's relationship was during this movie.

    Know what I mean?

  • frankie boyle sent me here ^_^

  • he could beat my ass any time.
