Cookin' The blues -- Merle Koch 1986

Together with Bob Havens, trombone, Eddie Miller tenor sax, Dick Cathcart trumpet and Bob Newman clarinet pianist Merle Koch (pronounced Cook) sets in a relaxed 12 bar blues with Honky Jones bass and V.J. Bourgeois drums.
This was the last session at Merle's small jazz restaurant called Silver Stope in Virginia City, Nevada. After many years with Pete Fountain in New Orleans Merle would invite many of his jazz musician friends to play at his club several weekends a year. This session on October 19 1986 would be the last one. He would die shortly after having suffered from throat cancer.
(This film was made available to me for posting through Bob Newman, who wrote me that these sessions were highlights in his life)

  • One of the greatest, truly, of all time...wish he were better known to jazzfans today!

  • Wonderful...musical masters all. That's one of the best Havens solos I've ever heard, and the superb Dick Cathcart shows that even "semi-retired" he was still an adventurous and very creative soloist...and Mister Miller, who had been playing professionally for more than 60 years...what a wonderful video and thanks to the poster and Mr. Newman for making it available.

  • To Mr. Cathcart's son - He's been my favorite trumpet man for years! You lucky person!!

  • look2dwesternsky. you dad is on some vids here on YouTube by Lawrence Welk and the same trombone player on this, Bob Havens, is on those L. Welk shows too. They are the best.

  • That;s my grandfather on the piano Merle Koch...

  • Your dad is first rate. I like how relaxed the solo is, interspersed with flurries of notes that created a very good balance overall.

    Really enjoyable!!

  • That's my Dad, Dick Cathcart, on the trumpet. He loved all these guys so much, and although he was semi-retired, he so enjoyed these jam sessions. And wasn't he wonderful?!

  • FIVE stars from me for this one!! What a superb group!!
