http://www.arielpublicity.com Cyber PR artist, Jennings talks with Ariel and Carla about how she effectively uses text messaging to promote her live shows. She discussed the problems with Facebook invites and email blasts and provides a great alternative.
I think people don't opt in to text services because they don't want those texts and I'm not wild about the idea of not bothering to ask them just because you think you won't get the response you want. I am more comfortable with Seth Godin's approach of permission marketing and might be more likely to text if the recipient had granted permission in some way.
Email was great, but then there was too much. FB was great, but now there are too many events. Oh, texts are how you trump that glut!

SlantsVideos, that's a brilliant approach to capturing both email and number! I like google voice too.

I have an email list with several thousands of people and when I once asked them through an email broadcast if anyone is receiving the messages direct to their phone, a huge percent immediately replied back from their phone (via email) to confirm so phone communication is very powerful, and I can see why Jennings' personal approach to reaching people effectively via text is effective.

One way we kind of made this easier was to sign up for a Google voice account; we have fans "text us" their email address to our Google voice number during shows and it allows us to capture their cell phone number at the same time. After the show, we enter the numbers into our database so that when we have a show, we target that area specifically and use Google voice to send the text (works like an email)
