DAY 13: OCTOBER 13th, 2008

LOCATION: L&B Spumoni Garden (86 St. and 11 St., Bensonhurst, Brooklyn)

ORDER: 3 slices of plain Sicilian

GUEST(S): Starr Kendall, Mitch Yashiro

PIZZA REVIEW: What could be better than eating pizza outside on a sunny day? If you said "eating Sicilian style pizza outside on a sunny day and cleansing the palate with spumoni" then you have obviously already been to L&B Spumoni Gardens. Escape expensive and cramped Manhattan pizzerias to this Bensonhurst pizza oasis for an expertly cooked Sicilian style pie loaded with rich tomato sauce and seasoned with just right amount of cheese and spices. Get one, twelve, or 24 slices - the more pie, the better the buy. Our half tray had been "heatlamped" for awhile but that didn't stop me from filling up on three slices. Remember to SRS - Save Room for Spumoni!

MISC.:
1. Mitch Yashiro is a friend from college who speaks perfect English and Japanese. He does both in the video clip.

2. Starr Kendall is a former guest from my talk show, The Spotlight, where we talked about his experience in the Scarface music video "On My Block." Here is a link to that discussion.

  • Sean - you gave L&B 4.25 stars, however i remid you that this is a sicilian (square) pie, which you cant compare to round pies...(apples and oranges)

On that note.. I challenge you to find a better square slice anywhere....

  • You bring up a good point that L&B may make the best square slices around. However, on your assertion that you can't compare square to round pies - sure you can. One comparison is that one is rectangular and the other is shaped like a circle. Both are pizza and I suppose, in general, I prefer Neopolitan (over Sicilian) but I consider myself fair and open minded.

  • If my open mind is blown by a square pie (or a Chicago style pizza) then I will rate it higher. All this being said, 4.25 out of 5 is a great overall rating. I strongly recommend going to L&B if you have never been and invite me along with you. I'd love to go back and get a more-fresh-from-the-oven pie than I had on October 13, 2008. Thanks for the comment, Darth.

  • It's a great tomato pie, but for us cheese lovers it would be so much better with a lot of MOZZ on it!

  • I went there for the first time yesterday, and I thought it was too tomato-ey too... until I was told they put the cheese on first (directly on the dough), then pour the sauce on top. The cheese is just hidden.

Awesome slice... at first I thought, it's just OK, kinda like an upscale Elio's slice (frozen pizza brand); but after the 4th or 5th bite I was getting what the fuss was all about, and know I'm jonesing for one.

  • wait a minute....it's called SPUMONI GARDENS , NOT "The Spumoni Garden"!!!!

  • You really can't compare teglia pizza with neo pizza, the only place that makes better teglia pizza is in rome.

  • how good is the pizza there? im going soon! :D

  • my grandpa was offered part owner in the business when it first started.

he turnnd it down thinking that nothing would come of it.

    seriously.

  • @darthbrooklyn

That is easy, try DiFara's, their Sicilian slice is the best. Especially if you get it with Pepperoni, Green Peppers and Onions.

  • It's not "The Spumoni Garden." It's called either "L&B" or "Spumoni Gardens."

  • Sean I'm an Italian-American and have eaten more pizza then any man alive. next time you go pizza tasting for Sicilain pizza there is one place that is the best. It's called "Ozone Pizzeria" on 96th Street and Liberty Avenue in ozone Park, Queens. trust me and taste their Sicilian. It's better than L&B. They have been open for 45 years.

  • i go to l and b im a brooklyn boy i got to l and b every saturday

  • hey Pianodannmarr! i agree with you on Da Vinci's I go there almost every friday night...but L&B is my favorite on sicilian pies & spumoni ices!!!!
