that's really great. i just had my job interview last week for NJ Transit, conductor. cross your fingers

They are very elegant lcomotives: a functional, self-propelled work of art. The New Haven livery doesn't do them any favours, though. Am I right in thinking that they are now 48 years old?

I like the old New Haven Railroad locomotives, and even the new Metro North & Shore Line East replicas, but it seems a little too inappropriate to run them on the Harlem Line.

The Metro North equipment pool now uses the GE Genesis - as already stated these FL9's are retired. Yes, they did run off of the 3rd rail or their own power. You can still run diesel into NY, but you need to be all electric to run underground into Grand Central - hence the dual mode power setup of the FL9's and Genesis P32ACDM's that replaced them (an appreciated change for most of those who work in their cabs from what I hear).

the ones with New Haven paint have been retired, yes. They now idle in the New Haven yard.

This is in New York. This is in Putnam County, approximately 54 miles north of Grand Central.
