China Airlines Flight 006 encounters turbulence while flying to Los Angeles. The No. 4 engine flames out and the crew tries to restart the engine at too high an altitude. The aircraft banks slowly to the right but the crew do not notice the autopilot can no longer hold the aircraft straight and level. The captain disconnects the autopilot and immediately loses control, sending the aircraft into a spiralling nosedive. The Flight Engineer mistakes readings on the gauges for total engine failures on all engines rather than the Captain setting the throttles to idle. The extreme forces rip the undercarriage doors off and parts of the horizontal stabilizers rip off as well. The Boeing 747SP clears the clouds and the pilot can once again see the horizon. The crew recover the aircraft from the dive and the it lands safely at San Francisco despite control problems associated with the tailplane damage. Two people are hurt, but everyone is alive.

  • Pilots are flying their aircraft less and less and so get more to depend on auto-controlles. This must cause them to get rusty and less able to take full control in situations where all their flying skills and all their know how needs to be ready for use. It's a situation which could be overcome with enough practice and training,, but that means time and a fair bit more money.

  • Boeing 747 the hero! Same here, if ain't Boeing, ain't going! Boeing your machines rock!!!

  • if it aint boeing, i aint going.

  • @737boeingfreak Yep, they fixed the plane and two months later it was back in service. D: China Airlines used it for 12 more years and then leased it to their sister company Mandarin Airlines in '97. Then it went to some religious organization, and in 2005 the FAA suspended its operating certificate due to insufficient maintenance. Last I heard it was being kept in a hangar in Tijuana.

  • Oh SNAP - Airbus dig at 3:04-3:29.

  • Shaken, Not stirred.

  • Did they use the plane again

  • Even though the pilot made mistakes it wasn't pilot error in this case because he was coming from the other side of the world without sleeping. You don't sleep whenever you want unless you are a child.

  • Performing less then is true potential ??????? HELLO are they for real he sure had his full potential when hell broke lose.

  • Airbus = Computer is in charge
