Passive, persistence in horse training might be Pat Parelli's motto, but he didn't show it at the Festival of the Horse. Robert Whitaker's horse Catwalk didn't like his bridle being put on, but Pat Parelli tried to force the horse with a rope and twitch in a session that lasted over 2 hours at Stoneleigh Park in the UK. Rope halters, lead lines, the carrot stick, and the Parelli method can be used for good or bad. This is not natural horsemanship. Do it natural...

  • I have to be honest and say that I am definitely not a Parelli fan .. But I do have to agree this is so not horse abuse.. Everyone has an opinion so I wouldn't call random people stupid, just because they don't agree with you..

  • Which pixel was the horse in?

  • I know a girl who used this method on her horse, she was kicked in the head because of it. I don't see natural horsemanship I see abuse and impatience

  • comparison.... look at how much time Pat spent teaching the horse ONE thing... He'll spend 2 hours perfecting one thing while other trainers spend 30mins to just teach them the basics so they can move on.... It shows just how much he cares.

And so next time you're in a clinic, STAY to see the end results before jumping to any conclusions about what you've seen...

  • Buddy... You need to touch up on your skills.. Yes the horse was afraid, but whatever Pat did was for the horse's sake and if you STAYED till the end of the clinic you would have seen the positive change that came out of it. And I've done Parelli and natural horsemanship first hand for 6 years now. I know what Pat is doing and why, and if he thought that what he was doing was gunna harm the animal either mentally or physically, he wouldn't have done it...

If you want a good compari

  • I see nothing abusive about using a twitch or the rope to keep the horse still. The horse obviously had some behavioral issues that needed to be dealt with and both methods of restraint are humane and used quite commonly. I know very little about Parelli and his approach, but neither of these things were started by him, so it is unfair to call him abusive. Besides, the videos were such poor quality you couldn't see enough to even tell what was going on.

  • I'm not a Parelli fan at all and it wouldn't shock me if he abused horses, but although it doesn't look like the ideal situation for this horse (ie: training a nervous, green horse in a loud stadium seems like a dumb idea) I don't see anything I would call horse abuse. Especially the backing up part - that's Horse 101 to set boundaries. If someone asked you to move over is that abuse?

  • If youre gonna talk/post smack... you should have videoed/seen more to form an educated opinion for everyone to witness about this parrelli guy. This seems to be a bit of an ignorant judgemental post!

  • Basically There moto is to lead but there style of leading is in my opinion not really leading at all its Domination of every signal part of the horses around People, where as friendship training and Hempfling In my opinion get better results with just a rope around the neck no sticks to "put pressure on them" the horse is in its self free and could easily disobey but It chooses to stay with the strong calm confident trustworthy leader and collect or lunge with not even a rope around its neck

  • gee, I sure wish I could ee something

  • @fburton8 if he didn't like his ears being handled then they should just accept it and leave the horse alone. If its a bridling issue then thats a different story...
