@goldsmith1210 Its the first year without Donnie. I don't know for sure but this is the first year that Michael Klesch wrote. So it might have been him and some Donnie staff left overs that basically made up the staff for Garfield (Barbara Maroney, Shorty, etc.) up until Frank Williams (from Suncoast) came into the picture in 1990.
The '85 cadets horn line was not all that great in terms of tone and intonation. The music is quite difficult but too many skweaky sops and and mellos. Did not change form mid-season to finals. BD's, SCV's and Suncoast's horn lines were all superior. All in all the best put together show from start to finish...That is why they won. I can't say enough about the disjointed SCV show. You also can't forget that at finals, the Cadets by far had the best drill and drill performance.
*sigh* So "nice" to see that DCI wasn't the only production crrew to miss big moments in the 80s....focusing on the bari soloist and the DM during the formation of the block in the opening statement??? REALLY??
@supousa hey...Suncoast? Yes, you guys also had a great hornline. I heard you guys rehearse a bunch and you did sound great. I'm not big on SCV and surely not big on (what I thought) was one of them taking a cheap shot at us.
@supousa BTW, I just checked the score sheet, because I have it - Suncoast and Cadets tied at DCI Semi-Finals in Ensemble Brass. Devils beat us both by one point. I don't have sheet 2 with Vanguard on it.
@HugeJohn51 Why would I have sour grapes? I marched Suncoast Sound - the hornline that beat you in individual and ensemble brass much of the time that year under the direction of Robert W. Smith. The highest score in DCI history is irrelevant because all of history wasn't competing that night. "Took awhile"? It still wasn't right at finals. If you have ears, just listen and try to convince anyone that was a strong hornline. Intonation was good - that's about it. And I said IMHO.
@supousa huh...sounds like sour grapes. I was marching for the Cadets that year. You know, SCV didn't even come second at DCI's right? and we got the highest score in DCI history up to that point and won Nat's by a point and a half. yes, it took a while to nail down the most difficult show in history to that point, sorry for pushing the boundaries and leaving the Vanguard behind. but yeah...'weak hornline'....lol.
Should've been second. Santa Clara was much better. This show took all the way until finals to get together, even then, weak hornline, members can't march or keep their horns still. IMHO.
