Stephen Bennison, Senior Technical Associate DuPont™ SentryGlas®: With regards to energy performance of buildings, um, one of the big benefits of using glass generally is to allow more daylighting. Um, that can save, , a lot of, , cost of, , artificially lighting the building. So, the use of century glass laminates, which allows you to essentially expand the amount of daylighting, , available, in in a building, has a direct impact on, , the energy performance of buildings. So, we see a lot of the use of the product in the design, especially of overhead glazing. So, these are canopies, or atria in a building, where, , youre getting a lot of direct, , natural lighting into the building. Not only it feels good, but its a it can save you a lot of, , costs, on, on artificial lighting. And, again, you get the high structural performance, so in case of accidental breakage, , of the overhead glass, m its going to perform the strong, , structural, , function. So thats one area where SentryGlas® does help with, , energy management of building. Also, theres another effect, , with , having much more structurally efficient glass, and use of thinner glass, is you can design much more efficient insulated glass units, because it allows you to actually make a a larger air gap in the insulated glass unit, which also is very good, especially in cold climates, , for, , essentially a insulating, , the building. And then, the third area where, where, , SentryGlas® helps from an energy management point of view is, through its compatibility with coatings that are put on glass. Um a lot of, a lot of energy management is also achieved through putting various coatings on glass to, , control, , the the, , wavelengths of light coming in into the building. Um, we see a lot of performance benefits. Again, certain, , coatings, , where we can get enhanced long-term, , durability.
Valerie Block, Architectural Marketing Specialist DuPont™ SentryGlas®: The LEED® program does place an emphasis on energy efficiency with glazing. Theres no question about that, because in the energy and atmosphere section, , an architect or a project can be designed to achieve, up to 10 points, within the LEED® program, for this kind of a solution thats built into the project. So, energy efficient glazing is recognized across the board as an important part of the LEED® program. Laminated glass is, by code, one of the products that is approved for use in skylights. And one of the best strategies in utilizing natural light into a space is through the use of skylights. So, if you combine the code requirement for laminated glass, and essentially thats a safety requirement to prevent falling glass from impacting somebody on their heads inside a space, along with the opportunity to gain natural lighting into a space, which means that youre going to cut down on electric lighting, and possibly even enable a downsizing of HVAC equipment, because youre relying on natural lighting instead of electric lighting. Thats how you can look at laminated glass most effectively, in projects that are designed to be highly energy-efficient. There are other ways of getting points with laminated glass, and maybe not as many points, but you certainly can take advantage of points that are available for daylighting, which would be a design consideration. How much lighting actually penetrates into a space? And so, were seeing architects design much more open spaces. More use of interior cubicles, where natural light can filter into a space. So, thats still a very good application for laminated glass, where laminated glass might be specified in windows for other reasons but still, that use of glass is going to enable you to get some points through LEED®.
