On January 1, 2011, Franz Welser-Möst takes up the baton for the annual Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert, which in terms of its international coverage represents the largest classical music event in the world. This year's concert will once again be broadcast on television and radio to over 70 countries worldwide.

The CD recording of this concert will be released on January 7th, with the release of the DVD following one week later on January 14th. The Blu-ray disc will be released on February 11th. All of these recordings can now be ordered here at the Vienna Philharmonic E-Shop.

Sein Debüt als Choreograph feiert Jean-Guillaume Bart, Danseur Etoile der Pariser Oper: "Für mich ist es, als ob ein Traum wahr wird. Schon als Kind habe ich immer das Neujahrskonzert gesehen und auch später als professioneller Tänzer. Es freut mich sehr, jetzt selbst dabei zu sein. In Frankreich ist das Neujahrskonzert auch sehr populär. Es vermittelt Glück, gute Wünsche und Schönheit. Es gehört zum Beginn des neuen Jahres dazu."

Märchenhafte Kostüme von Johan Engels
Johan Engels hüllt die Tänzerinnen und Tänzer zum fünften Mal in traumhafte Roben: "Die Wiener Staatsoper mit ihren zahlreichen Bällen war meine Inspiration für die Kostüme. Diese pompösen Kostüme sehen im Fernsehen gut aus und erinnern an Strauß und an die große Zeit des Walzers. Das Schloss Laudon ist perfekte Kulisse für kleine Geschichten. Hier haben wir drei Paare: u. a. einen Dichter - ganz in Weiß - in der Bibliothek, ein junges Mädchen in Tracht und einen Jäger." Der international gefragte Bühnen- und Kostümdesigner hat sich auch für das Live-Ballett der Eleven zum Donauwalzer etwas Besonderes einfallen lassen: "Für den Donauwalzer tragen die jungen Mädchen dieses Jahr Kostüme wie Debütantinnen in Gold und Weiß. Sie tragen keine ausladenden Formen und wirken dadurch sehr frisch."

I agree, Josef Strauss is wonderful! His music is so sensitively written, and yet is a match to Johann's for its regal quality. The dancing here is so romantic and elegant, and the costumes are just beautiful.
