CNN Video and News (CNN) -- Genetics pioneer J. Craig Venter announced Thursday (May 20, 2010) that he and his team have created artificial life for the first time.
Using sequences of genetic code created on a computer, the team assembled a complete DNA of a bacterium, then inserted it in another bacterium and initiated synthesis, or in Venter's words "booted up" the cell.
In a statement, Venter called the results "the proof of principle that genomes can be designed in the computer, chemically made in the laboratory and transplanted into a recipient cell to produce a new self-replicating cell," controlled only by the synthetic genome.

There is a train wreck headed for science in the near future. As a result of the atheists hijacking science, they have established "I.D. IS NOT SCIENCE", long before they actually knew how the cell operated. We now absolutely know its information driven
Science is dabbling in intelligent design now and will soon be involved in full DNA programming of new species. How can they say with a straight face "I.D. IS NOT SCIENCE" when they are practicing the very thing they claim is not science?. Crash

The next step is to build a cell from scratch along with the synthetic DNA strand in it. Then you'll have life from scratch. But all he's really done is replace the programming of a living cell with something new, not created new life.

I want to hear what the Discovery Institute has to say about this...

If you ask why we would spend 40mil on something like this your Dumb as hell!Besides 40mil is a drop in the bucket compared to the trillion dollar stimulus bill
40,000,000$:Research 1,000,000,000,000:Stimulus bill that did nothing tell me which would you rather do with the government money?

@lordjavathe3rd No, life it wasn't created " from scratch" and Venter has admitted it as far as I can remember from his interviews. They used a casing from a natural cell but swapped it's own genetic code for an artificial one. Media always tries to needlessly simplify or overamp things. That is not say that is insignificant, quite the opposite it is a huge breakthrough for science, as there are millions of practical applications for this knowledge, especially in medicine and food production.

according to the scientific definition of "life", he created it. The phosopholipid bilayer or the man-made strand of dna by themselves do not have the characteristics of life until they were put together. Yes, they just copied a known living organism's dna, but that's still a living thing and now man can make it (life). I mean theoretically now, we have the ability to make a human from scratch by just copying our genome and presto. That's pretty sweet.

@brno22504 their not terrorists do i doubt it. only the religious nutjobs would use synthetic life in the name of their stupid gods

@teedonster look into the origin of aids and hiv. This device which these scientist are calling "life" will be used to destroy populations they view as "inferior"

@brno22504 why do you people convince yourself of this crap?

they manipulated a cell nothing more
