Soldiers from B Company, 3rd Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Staffords) have completed a six month tour of Afghanistan.
Since February, the 150 soldiers have been operating as part of the Armoured Infantry Company equipped with the Warrior Armoured Fighting Vehicle.
B Company's role was to partner with the Afghan National Civil Order Police and the Afghan National Army to provide security through vehicle check points and patrols along Highway 1. It is the main artery through Helmand and Maiwand and has seen a 100 per cent rise in traffic in the last six months thanks to their efforts.
Major Steve Burton, B Company's Officer Commanding, said: "The Afghans have been good to work with and have a real desire to defeat the insurgents and bring security to their communities. The Company has had a number of major successes, most notably the capture of a senior insurgent bomb maker which really boosted the spirits of my men."
It has been a tough tour for the soldiers of B Company and the whole of 3 MERCIAN. They have regularly had to carry out patrols and operations, wearing helmets and body armour in temperatures above 40 degrees.
Well done guys welcome home. Our thoughts are with all the families who lost loved one in conflict. God bless you all
