Air suspension or pneumatic as it is sometimes called is now fitted to many new carriages, this takes the form of very tough rubberized air bags theses are used throughout the world on industrial plant machinery etc and the same principle is used on many of today's Lorries and trucks.
Some of the principle advantages over leaf springs are
Low weight of the unit compared to a set of leaf springs
The suspension strength can be infinitely adjusted to load or conditions
Few moving parts that will rattle or bang when worn
Particularly good for cross county and competition carriages
Air suspension can help in new design
