Wilkes-Barre PA, March 25 2011 -
Just days after the announcement that the historic Hotel Sterling may face the wrecking ball, a grass roots movement calling for preservation of the building held their first public demonstration outside the hotel. The fate of the Sterling may rest in the hands of CityVest, a non-government organization that took control of the property more than 10 years ago through a series of complicated transactions with the city of Wilkes-Barre and Luzerne County officials. Alex Rogers, executive director of CityVest says that his organization has exhausted all other possible options to develop the property. Local residents are asking how and why Rogers' allowed the property to deteriorate to its present state while managing to burn through 7 million dollars of state, county and federal funds earmarked for revitalizing the property that was once a beloved landmark in downtown Wilkes-Barre. In 2006, Rogers told the Wilkes-Barre Times-Leader: "We are greatly encouraged that the buildings that have been blighted for several years will be renovated."
