Emmanuel Reinert, Executive Director of The International Council on Security and Development (ICOS), discusses France's military role in Afghanistan with France 24's Top Story. Following President Sarkozy's controversial decision to send an extra 700 troops to the country, the deadliest attack on French soldiers since the war began left a deep feeling of animosity amongst the French population. Only recently did France taken a more dangerous role in Afghanistan, and the deaths of ten of their soldiers raised serious questions regarding foreign policy within French Parliament.
The extent of the Taliban's control, both psychological and geographical, throughout the country, is being globally denied by the international community, said Mr Reinert. The perception of foreign forces as liberators in 2001 has dramatically shifted, and the Afghan population increasingly reminisce about the Taliban era. Therefore in order to seriously challenge the Taliban, The Senlis Council urges those forces in the secure zones to come out and join those in the battle.
Whether France stays for the long haul or not, the present extension of operations needs a genuine show of unity from all coalition members
