Quicktime recording of my recently purchased (Aug2010) i5 Macbook Pro exhibiting the random trackpad problem, which lasts from 30 seconds to 10 minutes at a time, totally without rhyme or reason. Have taken it to the Genius bar and they ran a series of HW diagnostics that all passed, seemingly ruling out a HW issue. Has occurred when bootcamp booted into Win7, as well, though it seems rare (I am rarely booted into Win7, however, generally just run it as a VM under Fusion).

Have also tried associating/disassociating Magic Mouse to no avail.

After about 30 seconds into the video I stop trying to control the trackpad and you can see what it does all by itself. Thought it could be a resource issue and have limited my use of Fusion since I was giving Win7 1GB of RAM (of a total of 4). Just upgraded my MBP to 8GB of RAM and experienced the issue within minutes of booting & resolved to document and solve the problem. This video was taken when I was still running 4GB RAM.

  • ugh this is like a terrible issue and mine has been doing it forever!!!! im so mad!!! how can i fix it?

  • @penguinwaddle14 - hardware replacement fixed it. I took it to the Genius bar and they had it fixed the next day. Been solid ever since! BTW, even when i had an external mouse connected, I still had the problem.

  • Replace the trackpad

  • Sorry for the late response, but take a quicktime vid by launching quicktime player, then doing File->New Screen Recording. Again, my trackpad has been good after the Genius Bar replacement a few months ago!

  • I took mine to the Genius bar and had the trackpad replaced - has been good for about a month!

  • hey, i replaced my trachpad and the issue didnt away...

    what now?

  • I'm also having problems with the track pad. It often mistakenly opens 'right click' mouse features when I'm simply typing and switching windows. I think they have made the touch pad 'over-featured' and built too many commands into it so it keeps fucking up executing the wrong command. Its too sensitive and has too many useless features like needless "3-finger' commands--which are of little or no use--are merely a marketing gimmick.

  • In Sweden we dont have Genius bar and my fucking trackpad is crazy

    MAC Suck Balls

  • I have same damn problem with my Macbook Pro :S

  • EXACT SAME THING IS HAPPENING TO ME! 2011 MBP, osx lion. i have to shut down the computer and do a SMC reset to get it to work. sometimes the trackpad will work for 10 minutes, sometimes a day. it always acts up again though.

  • mine not only trackpad but also external mouse. even when using solely the keyboard short cuts it seems to have a mind of its own

  • this is a common problem with Snow Leopard. Not sure why and a fix is not coming from apple. my suggestion is to use an external mouse but you have to go to universal access and disable internal trackpad when external mouse detected
