  • Well, the topic is pre-cultural revolution because the characters keep refering to the Great Leap Forward, which happened much earlier. Because it was Mao's worst policy ever, even he distanced himself from it later on - it ended in complete failure and starvation, so this film HAS to predate the cultural revolution. My guess is that this film may have been reissued later.

  • it's not PRE Cultural revolution.....that would be before 1966........

  • Thanks Joanne, I had some trouble dating this film, and my reading of Chinese characters is not very good at all (!)... I'm glad people are watching this film, there is so much there to think about in terms of revolutions and mistakes and relevance.

  • Good comment. FYI: This film wasn't made pre-Cultural Revolution. I believe the description said that it was made in 1975, a year before the Cultural Revolution ended. The story, however takes place in 1958/59.
