Notice how small the stands were back then. I'll bet The Indy 500 had a Midwestern County/State Fair Feel to it then.
It was HUGE in terms of atmosphere by the 60's.

Mauri Rose didn't win the '39 race, Wilbur Shaw did. Shaw also won in '37 and '40, and was on his way to winning 3 in a row in 1941 when the wires in his right rear wheel came undone and he crashed into the wall. There was one wheel Shaws' team couldn't get balanced right, and they marked it "OK balance, use last." But the chalk marks were washed off during the attempt to extinguish the "Gasoline Alley" fire. Rose was the co-winner in '41, relieving Floyd Davis. Rose won in '47 and '48 also.

These videos need to be protected. That is so classic. All those men are lions. No way any driver today would dare take one of those cars around the track like that today. You say they are like Sprint Cars? Well sprint cars with ZERO safty, many do not even have belts holding the driver in. Some drivers want to jump off the 120mph cars rather than drive it into a wall. CRAZY!

Indy was like a slaughter house back then. It's amazing how the announcers used words like "death" and "devils" to describe the race. Amazing footage...wow! I have so much respect for the drivers back in those days.
