This was for a live broadcast of these birds, I lost count of?
One of the few times I was asked to mix through a limiter. So I used my Orban 418A, which is a Recording Studio version of the famous Orban FMOpti-Mod FM broadcast limiter. It's only because the radio station's real-time MP3 encoder would easily overload on its inputs. Otherwise, I don't prefer to mix down through any limiter.
This is with a newly restored vintage Neve console of all discrete (strictly transistor & not integrated circuit chips)design. Microphone preamps/EQ's were of the 3115 type. Their front panel controls are identical to the famous 1073 with similar highly similar acoustic signature, while having A/B output drivers rather than pure class A.
Microphones utilized on the stage were strictly chosen by the PA Company. Splitters so are believed to have been by Jensen and were supplied by the venue. So this is a recording of the secondary split.
I was requested not to add any additional reverb by the band's representatives. Obviously by listening, you'll hear plenty of reverb. All reverb units were shut off and were not utilized. The incredible amounts of reverb heard, is the natural reverb on this large outdoor venue which quite overwhelmed most microphones on the stage.
Equalization on the Neve was largely minimalistic except for some high pass filtering and a few mid range and high-frequency tilts. However the lead vocal was processed with a 1976 vintage UREI 1176LN post high pass filtering & very minorequalization. In addition, a few other instruments were processed with UREI 1176LN, newer version high impedance silver face, a couple of LA 3's and a couple of DBX165A's.
Some drum equalization was utilized along with phase inverting of the bass drum. Otherwise, no real tricks there.
While still recording to the 24 track digital machine, for multitrack back up, what you are hearing here is the live, fly by the seat of my pants, stereo mix, presented for the live broadcast. It has not been modified in any way.
Audio and picture quality of this clip are from slow speed, VHS hi-fi archives.
Date of recording is 1997
Thanks for the comments!
Yup, I like my drums fat and myself skinny.
The bass guitar sounds overwhelming because You Tube is taking everything stereo and collapsing it to Mono. Go figure? What don't they understand about stereo with pictures? It's been around since the early 1980s. This builds the center image by 6 DB which of course makes the bass guitar too big and the vocal too forward. To hear the actual stereo version go to My Space and search RemyRAD or, "Numerous Birds".
